The dastgah system
What is a dastgah
Established A dastgah is the Persian classical modal system — analogous to Turkish makam but structurally different. The word means roughly "system" or "apparatus." Like makam, a dastgah is not merely a scale: it carries a hierarchy of pitches, characteristic melodic phrases, a prescribed path of modulation, and a repertoire of composed and semi-improvised pieces (the radif).
The critical structural difference from Turkish makam: a dastgah is a large container that includes within it multiple subsidiary modal areas, called gushe, through which a performance moves. A dastgah performance is a journey through these gushe in a specific order, not a composition in a fixed mode.
Dastgah vs. makam — structural differences
Attested The most important differences for a player coming from the Turkish tradition:

The Turkish system is more precisely codified on paper; the Persian system is more honest about the fluidity of pitch in practice. Neither is more correct — they reflect different approaches to organizing the same underlying musical continuum.
The 7 dastgahs
Established Persian classical music recognises seven primary dastgahs. Each is an independent modal universe with its own repertoire, hierarchy, and internal structure.

Practice Shur is by far the most commonly performed and the one most instruction begins with. It is to Persian music roughly what Rast is to Turkish — the foundational dastgah, though its character is very different (Shur is melancholic where Rast is open and bright).
The 5 avazes
Established In addition to the seven primary dastgahs, five avazes (sometimes called naghmeh) are recognised. These are smaller modal systems that are satellites of a parent dastgah — they share its pitch material but establish their own distinct melodic character and emphasis points.

Attested That four of the five avazes are satellites of Shur reflects Shur's dominance in the repertoire. Shur is not one mode — it is a modal family with more internal variety than any other dastgah.
Key concepts
Shahed
Established The shahed (witness) is the pitch that receives the most melodic emphasis in a given gushe or dastgah. It is functionally similar to the Turkish guclü (dominant) but shifts as the performance moves through different gushe within a dastgah. The shahed in the opening gushe (daramad) is different from the shahed in later gushe — this is part of the journey.
Forud
Established The forud (descent) is the cadential gesture that returns from the current gushe back to the dastgah's resting point. It typically involves a characteristic descending phrase — not just landing on the final but arriving through a specific melodic formula. The forud is recognisable: experienced listeners know which dastgah is being performed partly from the forud pattern.
Ist
Established Ist (stop, staying) refers to dwelling on a particular pitch — holding or repeating it to establish it as a temporary centre of gravity. Ist on the shahed is how the performer signals "this is where we are now" within the dastgah's journey.
Mutable pitches
Established Certain pitches in the Persian system are explicitly recognised as mutable — their exact intonation changes depending on which gushe or dastgah is active. The koron (quarter-flat) and sori (quarter-sharp) accidentals are markers of this mutability, not fixed microtonal values.
Practice This is a fundamental difference from the Turkish AEU system, which assigns fixed comma values to each perde. Persian theory acknowledges that a "koron E" in Shur and a "koron E" in Segah may be different actual pitches — the context determines the tuning. On the setar, this is accomplished by adjusting the tied frets between dastgahs (see Setar fret adjustment).
Brief history
Established The dastgah system as currently understood was codified in the late Qajar period (late 19th / early 20th century), primarily through the work of musicians who organised the repertoire into the radif — a sequential collection of gushe grouped by dastgah.
Attested Key figures in this codification:
- Mirza Abdollah (c. 1843-1918) — his radif, transmitted through his students, became the most widely taught version and the basis for most modern performance. The radif of Mirza Abdollah is effectively the canonical text of Persian classical music.
- Hosseingholi (Mirza Abdollah's brother) — transmitted a parallel radif tradition, particularly strong in tar performance.
- Ali-Naqi Vaziri (1887-1979) — moderniser who attempted to systematise Persian intervals using Western notation, including the introduction of the koron and sori accidental symbols. His systematisation was influential but controversial — some argue it imposed Western categorical thinking on a more fluid practice.
- Hormoz Farhat (1929-2021) — musicologist whose The Dastgah Concept in Persian Music (1990) provided the standard English-language analytical framework, organising each dastgah's internal gushe structure and intervallic content.
Practice The tension between Vaziri's systematisation and the oral-tradition fluidity of the radif is an active conversation in Persian music pedagogy. There is no equivalent of the Turkish AEU system's claim to a single, fixed intervallic truth — Persian theory has always been more comfortable with ambiguity in pitch specification, which is why the mutable-pitch concept exists as a first-class theoretical element rather than an embarrassing theory-practice gap (as the Ussak problem is sometimes treated in Turkish discourse).
